However, keep in mind - they are renewable. Although there is an environmental impact at present there are promising technologies currently under investigation that may in fact reduce the impact of the position held by some. For example, syntehtic biology initiatives seem to be moving in the direction of chemically developing the ingrediants necessary to produce biofuels without the carbon debt sighted in "Wheels off the Biodiesel Bandwagon." Clearly, there is no one answer to this issue. On the other hand, maintaining the status quo is simply not acceptable either.
